Please don't say move to a bigger house, I and barely afford the AC/Heat on this one!. One of the ideas I came up with was to look up some formulas and pull out the CD case drawers to different levels to create a quadratic diffuser. <g> What do you do for projects storage? Max Arwood

From: Max Arwood on 6 Apr 2008 17:27 You mean you do not have backups of all that stuff of Bert' from last year? And one more thing, soon there will be no place for me to watch TV, eat, or lay down to rest. Guess I don't have much time for all that anyway with all the recording and backing up! Sorting room (regular people call it the living room) ..... http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/4069/morecdsap5.jpg What really worries me is that I am starting to do more video projects lately!!!!! Talk about disk space! Yikes, I do think I've finally found someone who's mess of media storage is worse than mine! ;-) Actually, it looks like you probaby have a lot more than me, but I have much more limited space in my studio. I do need to do something, though, because I'm running out of space in normal media storage-type stuff and starting to have some piles of medai on my desk, and, the more I get, the less desk space I have. Not to mention, the harder it gets to find the right media when I need to do a remix or something. One thing I have done to some degree is switched from normal CD jewel cases to slim-line CD jewel cases for some of my media. The good thing is you can fit two slim-line cases in the space of a single normal jewel case, so it could conceivably double your storage if you fully convert over time. The bad thing is it makes media MUCH harder to find since there is no spine label. I think the solution to that is to put together some sort of database that references the media titles, and have a filing system that files things by some kind of catalog number and religiously puts media back at its catalog number location, so you just have to search for what you want on the computer, find where it's supposed to be, then go over and get it, as opposed to look through multiple shelves, drawers, and/or whatever of media. (That could even make it faster than searching through spine labels if your filing system ends up being somewhat random in terms of being able to find projects logically, and I suspect that happens to most everyone who runs out of storage after awhile.) However, it would also be a lot of work to set up, especially when you've already got a lot of media. I've also considered going back to my older multi-CD archives and consolidating to DVD, but it's really hard to justify doing that due to the amount of time and effort involved (not sure on costs as media is pretty cheap, and I have no clue how many multi-CD archives I have at the moment, but that mainly pays off big time on space if there are a lot of multi-CD archives). Ted's notion of just getting rid of project stuff once everyone approves the mix wouldn't work for me because most of what I've got is all my own stuff, and I frequently revisit old projects to remix them to try and get them up to my current production standards, or occasionally to tweak things to work for another singer. I guess if I were mostly doing work for hire for others that might be more of an option in that they could be given their own archival media, and then it's their responsibility to deal with it.
