Leafnode 2 is also extremely easy to set up. I think I built it from
source on my Mac without any difficulties. It's supposedly an alpha or
beta or something but I have had zero issues with it in something like
two years now.

I also find that the fetchnews from Leafnode 2 is about an order of
magnitude faster than its predecessor.

I bet it's still not as good as newsstar ;->. With broadband more casual
usenet users might as well read news online but I always end up going
back to newsstar + INN2 [1] so I can seamlessly use a free server
somewhere as a backup for when my ISP's breaks down. I wish there was a
standard for using some sort of online newsrc files so you could read
news from any client without losing track of which articles you've read.

[1] INN1 would be adequate except most of its options are compiled in
and I didn't like the Debian defaults last time I tried it. It's easier
to apt-get install inn2 than to compile INN1.

Possibly not, though you are perhaps a tiny bit biased... :)

That sounds rather like what would happen if you crossed Google Reader
with the 1980s!

That's why I use slrn, running in a "screen" session that I log into
from my office, my lounge, or a hotel room. Not ideal but just about
workable! I think this SLRN process has probably been running for
close to 6 months now!

Why keep slrn open? As long as it's running on the same machine it'll
keep the same newsrc. I used to run it over ssh but overall I'd rather
use Claws than have that convenience.
