True, but you know that quite often people ask the wrong question rather than explaining their problem (which the original poster did) and asking for a recommended solution. Since he already had another place to adjust the volume, the didn't need a variable attenuator that would, once the setting to get the level into the right ballpark was determined, would remain at that setting for the next ten years or so. A fixed attenuator would be the better solution once he could quantify roughly how much attenuation he needed . Any pot would do for that.
