From: garywpaul on 6 Apr 2008 21:18 I am thinking of upgrading to one of the creative suites ( I have studio 8), and want to know the difference between Fireworks and photoshop. While I have both, I never use PS. The package I am thinking about does not include the FW CS3, but does have the new PS plus some others. Should I just start getting used to PS or go with a package that included FW. What does everyone use and your thoughts please. Gary
From: Alec on 6 Apr 2008 21:31 Photoshop and Fireworks, while similar, are different. While they both allow you to work with bitmap and vector art, Photoshop excels at bitmap editing, photo touch-up, and creating photo-realistic artwork - but it lacks serious web tools. Fireworks excels at working with web graphics specifically, and with prototyping websites with its unique features such as intelligent 9-slice scaling, multi-page documents with master page support, and symbols/instances. A competent user can get by with one or the other, but having both is very nice. Design layouts and comps with Photoshop. Import to Fireworks and prototype the site. Export assets from each for use in Dreamweaver. -- Alec Adobe Community Expert

While I have both, I never use PS. If you can afford it, buy the upgrade that includes both. Otherwise, if you are already proficient in FW, get that one. PS is bloated, weak in vectors, difficult to learn, and vastly overrated for web design; Adobe's suggestion to design in PS and "prototype" in FW (whatever the heck that means) demonstrates the company's lack of understanding of how good FW is as a web design tool. Adobe got FW when all they really wanted was Dreamweaver and Flash, and there were too many users to justify killing it off; now they're trying to make it fit in their product lineup without admitting it's a better basic design tool than Photoshop. Oh, the humanity!
From: PJR on 7 Apr 2008 07:28 Personally I am very comfortable within the FWs interface and use it for 90% of my work. I do have PS and use it for the very rare occasion when I need to output in a CMYK colour format. If my project is screen based, I'm in Fireworks right form the beginning because I can work faster there for that type of job. If I'm doing print work, or I have images which need some serious retouching (or RAW files from my digital camera) I'm in Photoshop or Lightroom for some if not all of the job. -- Jim Babbage - .:Community MX:. & .:Adobe Community Expert:. http://www.communityMX.com/ CommunityMX - Free Resources: http://www.communitymx.com/free.cfm --- .:Adobe Community Expert for Fireworks:.
