From: SSHO_99 on 12 Feb 2005 23:55 I can't get a simple Win98SE to talk to an XP machine. The connection is a simple ethernet connection running through a single ethernet switch. I've tried the XP wizard repetedly which had me make a floppy and loading the NETSETUP.EXE file with no luck. On both machines I choose the name of the workgroup to be MSHOME. I cannot ping the XP > 98 or vice-versa. I'm guessing I have enough permissions on the XP machine and a valid guest account because I can do the old Direct_Connect cable and have it work half way (the XP can see and access the 98 computer but the 98 cannot see or access the XP computer). But, I can't even get that far using a network connection. I have a coouple of questions I'm stuck on before I get to the real data. A. Should the XP machine have it's TCP/IP be setup as automatic? B. Once I have this 'fixed', will I find the WIN98 computer in the XP "View Workgroup Computers" section by selecting the workgroup MSHOME and vice-versa for the other computer? Also, I read the post just a few below this one by GaryDave and the response by Chuck. Here is my results of what Chuck suggested to get started: 1. On the Win98 machine. I stopped the browser service as described here: http://cms.simons-rock.edu/faq_by_subtopic/node138.html I did notice that I could no longer see the Win98 computer in the network neighborhood after I did that. 2. I could not "Stop, and Disable the browser service on the WinXP computer. Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services." because I could not find the browser service as a service. 3. I ran the IP config utility on the XP machine and here is it's results: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : LAPTOP Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0D-56-DC-50-B0 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.136.177 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled Any help would be appreciated. I'm tried on/off for days to fix this but >seem to be stuck. If you have two computers, and neither can ping each other (by name or did you try ip address too?), then that's where you need to start. Basic connectivity should be your first concern. What's the make and model of the ethernet switch? Posting "ipconfig /all" from the WinXP computer is a good start. To really be useful, though, we need the same from the Win98 computer. With Win98, you may use winipcfg if you wish. After you post ipconfig for BOTH computers, please refrain from restarting either, so the settings remain constant. Depending upon what authority is resolving the TCP/IP setting (NBT setting?), it is probably a good idea, in your case, to force NBT to on, rather than automatic. The ipconfig above shows NBT disabled. Once you resolve the connectivity (ability to ping) issue, then we can work on the ability to browse ("View Workgroup Computers"). When we're done, this will work on either computer, for finding the other. -- Cheers, Chuck Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing. From: SSHO_99 on 15 Feb 2005 20:31 Thanks for your patience guys. Family members sickness took precedence over replying. Back to the issue. First, I took Doug's idea to "Click the WINS tab and enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" and combined it with Chuck's comment to use "winipcfg" and found my real ip, subnet, gateway and DNS server address. I changed the laptop (XP) TCP/IP settings to be fixed and used the Win98's (the permanently connected machine's) settings on the xp machine for the subnet, gateway and DNS server address and added a single digit to the ip address used on the Win98 and wala', both computers showed up in the workgroup on both computers. Of course, I also had made both firewalls wide open and fully shared both c drives, but at least I had connection and could ping both the ip and the computer names from both machines. I was able to complete my task of transferring files, however it doesn't solve my long term problem. So, when I have time to post both computers full ipconfig info and wait for a response (without rebooting), I'll repost then. But first, I have a few questions to get me on the right track. 1. On xp, I can run the ipconfig /all command and copy/paste the results here. However, if I run that command on the Win98 machine, the dos box appears/disapears before I can capture the data to post it. Plus, if I use the winipcfg command on Win98, I can't seem to manually copy the data. Is there a way to easily copy/paste the ipconfig data from the Win98 machine? 2. I manually forced the XP machine to the manual ip settings described above to make a quick connection, however I'm sure my IP wouldn't like me picking an address one digit above the Win98 machine (the one permanently connected to the net). Should I be able to have connected just by leaving the XP machine to automatically detect the settings (remember, my Win98 machine is the permanent machine). Thanks.
