An interesting application of the accelerometer concept can be seen at
http://memento.ieor.berkeley.edu/index2.html

This requires java scripting to be enabled in your browser. It is a live
sine based graphical representation of geological movement in area
with several major faults namely the San Andreas and Hayward faults
along with many smaller faults

While checking the link before posting I notice the live server is
off-line at the moment. The site is however, sending out pre-recorded
data from a 5.0 magnitude event so you can get a good idea of what they
are representing.
