is it possible that a user be added twice to the same unix box. ? it
looks like that i have been added and things are messing up one of the
applications that i am using which authenticate against the os.

your help will be appreciated.

Not intentionally, but I have seen this happen. It depends on which tools
were used to add the user. Editing the /etc/passwd file could produce two
users with the same name. The authentication programs will probably only
validate against one entry.
