From: Geoff Cox on 22 Apr 2008 02:37 Hello, I'm looking for an affordable linux hosting option for an educational project. This project may well get media coverage and the likelyhood of a high number of hits following a radio broadcast. The project will only last for a few months. Webfusion offer 1.8 GHz Celeron 512 MB RAM 40 GB disk for approx 44 per month. This is a relatively low price (? )but what do you think of the server spec? Any better alternatives in the UK? Cheers Geoff

Do you need a dedicated machine? And does it have to be Linux? http://csoft.net offer shared FreeBSD hosting, with apache etc, and shell access via ssh. No bandwidth limit and quite a bit of hard drive space. Month by month contracts. They seem to be reliable and tech support is generally very responsive and helpful. They're in Canada though. -- http://SnapAndScribble.com/will

B-) The figure that is most important is how much data/month on what sized pipe (in real terms) they offer with that. It's no good haveing a cheap server behind a small pipe with a low data throughput. The information available from http://www.webperf.net and http://uptime.netcraft.com/ can be enlightening. Have some salt handy, just like any information from the 'net. -- Cheers Dave.

What you get for that price will produce a negligible load on that hardware. Unless you have something you're not telling us about also running! -- Nick Kew Application Development with Apache - the Apache Modules Book http://www.apachetutor.org/ |
