After I posted I realised that 'Cakewalk' is a specialist set of audio
programmes. I thought it was the noun!
Like I said, a no-nothing.

If you're not needing the beautiful cakewalk products (and I'm assuming you
are not) then Audacity might help you out. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
It's OpenSource and free to use. It's pretty basic but it will let you work
with most audio file formats and is pretty simple to use.
