I like to move my MS optical trackball with my fingertips, which means upside
down (cord towards me) , but I can't change the ball's action in this version
of XP. On another computer, XP includes (at settings>control
panel>mouse>activities an "Orientation" function that could do just that. But
the version of XP in this computer (which seems to be newer and more
"helpful") does not include "activites".

not sure if it helps but is it so new that nobody hs yet installed the
drivers for the trackball, often the most usefull bits are in drivers that
have to be downloaded and installed

Install the correct "Intellipoint" mouse drivers. You can find them on
the Hardware pages on www.microsoft.com
