From: herbzee on 1 May 2005 13:09 Is it possible to still print in black when color cartriges are used up on the Canon i960, if so, how?
From: Burt on 1 May 2005 13:32 With a much older canon printer that my wife used only for printing emails and web site info in gray scale we just let the color ink run out and never replaced it. We continued to print in black for years. I then wanted to have her print in color and installed color carts, ran a few cleaning cycles, and it did print in color. Photos, however, didn't print with correct colors. Probably it had color jet damage or considerable blockage from running them dry and leaving them without ink for years. I would guess that if your printer continued to function whent he color inks ran dry you could continue to print in black, but I wouldn't suggest it if you ever want to print color again. I use the I960 as well. If my printing was primarily black text I would want to preserve the option to do an occasional color print. I would use aftermarket cartridges that others have reported good success with. I would absolutely use aftermarket carts (or refill) if I were printing primarily black text as there would be little, if any, difference in color tone from one vendors black to another for text purposes. For black and white photo printing, however, some aftermarket black inks have been reported to have an unsuitable color caste. If you want more information on aftermarket inks check www.neilslade.com/papers/inkjetstuff and www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/ . herbzee" <her.ky(a)verizon.net> wrote in message news:C38de.4633$yd1.472(a)trndny01... > Is it possible to still print in black when color cartriges are used up on > the Canon i960, if so, how? >
From: herbzee on 1 May 2005 17:28 Hi Burt, thanx for the prompt reply. Very informative-but how to avoid the warning screen that certain color cartriges are empty, this does not allow me to continue. Plus hpw can I get the Icon back in the tray so I can get to the status monitor? I'd appreciate ur help. cheers-Herb. The status monitor is started in the maintenance screen, one of which tabbed screens is available when you click preferences in the driver software. I don't use the monitor as it is not that accurate regarding ink levels, and I check the carts periodically to refill them. Someone may be able to post a message to you that would tell you how to have the status monitor activated on startup, but I've never done that. Since I have not permitted a cart to run out of ink I didn't know if the printer would stop working if an ink cart ran out. In my wife's old canon printer we just closed the warning window about ink levels low or out and it permitted her to keep printing. Wish I could be more informative on these questions. For a little more than two dollars apiece you can buy Alotofthings Arrow cartridges or Wiredbeans cartridges and still have the option to print things in color without worrying about the ink out problem.
