Since a few days I'm getting this weird error syndrome when trying to
burn DVD-R discs:

- my DVD writer can mount CDs, mount DVDs, and burn CD-R with no problem.

- if I insert a blank DVD-R, the drive starts, but ultimately fails
to recognize the disc (kernel says `cdrom: open failed' and
burning programs return ENOMEDIUM, as if the drive were empty).
(This is the same box of blank discs I was always using. I am
assuming it is improbable that the first 12 were all OK and the
last 13 are all bad, right?)

- replacing the DVD writer with a totally different model did NOT
cure this problem. However, rotating my optical drives so that the
DVD writer is now the secondary master (rather than the secondary
slave) DID cure it. As fas as I can see, the writer now performs
exactly as desired.

Apparently something about my computer apart from the drives is causing
this. Can a bad IDE cable cause that sort of trouble, or do I have to
assume (shudder) that my mainboard is going?

It might just be the IDE cable. If the problem comes back, try a new
cable.

Do you mean that you not only want a wrong answer, but a certain wrong answer?

Blown out secondary controller or bad cable? Try switching the cables
(p<->s).

Or maybe 13 is unlucky :)
