From: Giles on 21 Aug 2005 08:41 The conjunction of new (Windows based) job and birthday resulted in Dearly Beloved presenting me with a PDA. It had to be Pocket PC, rather than Palm, for various reasons, and I gratefully unwrapped an Acer N50 Premium. Although hardly Ives, or even Palm, in design, it is a rather nice bit of kit, and better looking than the HP things. It has a 320x280 screen rather than VGA - the VGA ones were somewhere the wrong side of affordability - but it is clean and sharp. The thing is fast - 520 mhz - and has bluetooth, wifi and - via the cradle - usb hosting, which I haven't tried yet. The Windows mobile interface is taking some getting used to, but isn't too bad. So, after extensive playing, the Acer does ssh2 and VNC, and is syncing properly with the Macs running Missing Sync Windows Mobile 2 over usb, bluetooth and over the wifi network. The connection to my k700i phone still needs sorting though. And for some reason, the wifi will not work with WEP. Missing Sync will install programs, but only as .cab files. Many seem to come as installer .exe files, to be installed via Active Sync. I can't get Active Sync in Virtual PC 7.02 to find the Pocket PC via the usb cradle. It is on an XP VM. I've searched the Virtual PC group and tried the one suggested method I found there, without success. Has anyone got Active Sync working in Virtual PC? It's not a huge problem, as I should be able to use Active Sync at work, but it would be good to get it working. TIA Giles

It wasn't a major hassle to get working, just had to make sure that MissingSync wasn't running on the Mac side of things first. -- Steve H 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' http://www.italiancar.co.uk - Honda VFR800 - MZ ETZ300 - Alfa 75 TSpark Alfa 156 2.0 TSpark Lusso - Passat 1.8 Turbo SE - COSOC KOTL BoTAFOT #87 - BoTAFOF #18 - MRO # - UKRMSBC #7 - Apostle #2 - YTC #

I can further report, Active Sync is working with my Smartphone on VPC, too. -- Steve H 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' http://www.italiancar.co.uk - Honda VFR800 - MZ ETZ300 - Alfa 75 TSpark Alfa 156 2.0 TSpark Lusso - Passat 1.8 Turbo SE - COSOC KOTL BoTAFOT #87 - BoTAFOF #18 - MRO # - UKRMSBC #7 - Apostle #2 - YTC #

It works perfectly on my desktop, but has never suceeded on my laptop. The odd thing here is that the virtual PC OS is the same on both machines (Win 98). As mentioned elsewhere, almost every developer will happily send you cab files, even of the demos of the software. Gwynne -- My real email is net, not line.

I have managed to get it working, but my way involved removing MissingSyncListener from Library/Startupitems and restarting the Mac, as well as turning 'listening' off in the MissingSync prefs, otherwise MissingSync seized the connection. Then I checked the Pocket PC on the USB setting list of the virtual machine and started it up. Device recognised and Activesync worked. The restart of the Mac seemed to be necessary because any use of MissingSync in the interim meant that it grabbed the PDA and started up when connecting. Now all I need to do is figure out what the hell MissingSync did with/to the calendar/iCal entries. Giles |
