From: ed jurewicz on 26 Sep 2005 21:47 I have an asus A8N-e motherboard running windows xp sp2 with an amd 64 3000 in an Antec Performance II series case. The rear usb ports work fine but the two front ports are problematic. Certain devices such as mice and keyboards will work but others such as my mp3 player or jump drive do not. When I install such devices I first get a message that a new device has been found. I then get a message that the device has been installed immediately followed by "usb device not recognized." The same device when plugged into the rear ports works fine. Any suggested on causes and corrections would be greatly appreciated.

They are notorious for having problems with the front USB ports on the their cases.

To test the motherboard ports, the manual for the A8N-E claims the product comes with USB PCI slot adapter cables. Unplug the Antec front panel, and plug those adapters temporarily. Plug your MP3 player and Jump Drive into the Asus adapter. I bet they will work. A number of Antec computer cases ship with USB 1.1 only front panel assemblies. You can contact Antec and request a USB 2.0 assembly, to replace the one in your case. In the case of the Sonata I bought, the front panel assembly has the word "USB 2.0" printed right on the circuit board, implying it does not need to be replaced. If you are able to use the adapters from the motherboard box, and they work, it implies something is wrong with the Antec front panel assembly. Either deal with Antec, or buy a drive bay adapter to take the place of the Antec interface. The Asus J-Panel is a possible replacement, but it is not available any more. There are certainly a ton of other drive bay devices, but each one will be an "experiment" just like your Antec adventure: http://www.office-trade.com/pdf/B99Z429.pdf http://www.computer-communications.de/start.htm?mainboards_asus.htm Paul

It's not your mobo but may work just the same. http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=57472.msg381397#msg381397

It's not your mobo but may work just the same. > > http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=57472.msg381397#msg381397 There are two ways to wire 2x5 headers (see page 15) http://www.usb.org/developers/whitepapers/power_delivery_motherboards.pdf Asus puts a motherboard fuse (polyfuse type) per each pair of USB ports on a 2x5 header. There is no need for a USBOC# (over-current logic signal from front panel, indicating too much current is being drawn). Instead, the Asus boards have NC (no connect) on that pin. So accidently shorting the USBOC# pin is not an issue for the Asus motherboard manuals I've looked at. There are other brands of motherboards that use the USBOC# pin. And then the advice in msg381397 makes sense. Paul
