OK, I think I understand what you are saying. Please let me know if I
understand you correctly.

When running SuSE, do you connect to the internet during bootup or
after? It seems like after.

When you connect, you need a user name and password to log into your
isp?

Obviously, you will have to find some way to log into your isp before
installation can begin. I'm sure this is possible, but I have no idea
how do do that. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

after when i need to go on the internet; i could ask boot at startup but
that changes nothing to my problem as i actually do not the installed
distro when booting from install cd

here a note from an install howto found at suse
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!! IMPORTANT NOTE !!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you get errors such as "No installation media found on server" or
"Package foo.rpm does not exist" it most likely means that
a) The ftp/http server you are using is not accepting new
connections.

I will contact f belnet.be to see if i can connect to them without an
isp; may be there is a trick for that; i read of nfs in a suse book may
be it is the clue but network is nearly like a black box to me.
A solution would be useful for others too because my situation (single
home workstation) is not unique.
to bypass the problem i have downloaded the whole directory
ftp://ftp.belnet.be/packages/suse/suse/i386/9.2/suse/i586 and tried to
install from hard disk but the installation program does not accept and
says :cannot find the image. Check the directory specification

Never mind. i appreciate your help (and the help of other people!) even
if there is not yet a solution.
I also wonder whether it is possible to install a new distro in a free
linux partition from a existing os in another partition; i doubt of it
but that would solve my problem...
If i finally get results i will tell you so ckeck this thread a few days
to see.
I am not stranded because i have a working os but it is a good way to learn.

This probably means you have specified the wrong directory: look at my
post. You need to go down further or come back up a bit. That's all.

OR you are using a boot disk made from one machine type boot directory,
say x86-64, but you have pointed the ftp installer at another machine
type directory, eg i386.

It means they are BUSY: they have a few connections available and all
for anonymous ftp are taken! Keep trying...or try again later.
You will find ftp.heanet.ie fast and easy to get in to...unless
everybody on the continent follows my posted advice !
Good luck
Tom.

Good news !
In the end i could install 9.2 via ftp. So it was the modem whose
configuration was not correct.
Now the connection led is always green.
I have still to follow the problem because it seems that, as far as ftp
is concerned, i have to reconfigure it each time i will work with ftp
and that (don't smile) because in order to reach internet with a distro,
i have to reset the modem to default.i will reread the modem's user
guide. I suspect something remains from the old configuration.
Any way i could do what i wanted and it was fast and easy!.
Conclusion :
-Thank you very much to all of you who helped me.
-I still have learned something, it is never too late.
