The part about the drive-by cleaning lady. Is she using a wireless laptop?
It's been recommended here that I just ignore you. Bye!

Think twice about doing that. Peter's just urging you to think.

Indeed he was. TooManyPutters, you should stop and consider that Peter
took the time to compose and post some valuable and well-considered
advice. Refusing to listen to him because you don't like his tone is
seizing the booby-prize. He put wisdom and care into that post, and, if
you ignore it, you lose. The people who _didn't_ care are the ones who
didn't bother to respond to your query (which included me, until this
moment).

The concern about autologin mechanisms of various sorts is that it might
be subverted by someone. If you're not willing to consider possible
threats, you shouldn't connect computers to the Internet.

There are several different ways of making a Linux (or other Unix)
computer autologin. I suspect that this thread became a little confused
because the early part of the discussion suffered considerable vagueness
concerning which of those sundry ways you proposed to use.

What you _probably_ had in mind was one of the safer ways of doing that,
namely the autologin feature of certain display managers such as GNOME's
gdm or KDE's kdm. That type of autologin would not be subject to abuse
from remote locations, because the X Window System display engine
("server") on modern Linux systems doesn't accept connections from
remote locations.

Thus, all you'd really have to worry about is people physically in a
position to walk up to your graphical terminal, and use your computer as
if they were you. (This would include people who walk away with your
Linux laptops.) If that is a reasonable risk for you, then there's
nothing wrong with enabling autologin -- and, if you want, you can
also set a screensaver to run and require a short password for access to
the running X Window System session if you've stepped away for a few
minutes.
