I want quicktime move to play but while its playing be able to press a button
and get what frame number its at in order to launch a different move and then
start that new movie to begin at fram number of my choosing.
can i do that in the director programs? or what do ineed.

Yes, you can do what you ask. Except that, instead of asking the
QuickTime movie for its current frame number, you'd ask for its currentTime
