hal 32/64 bit oss-10.3.x86_64 on AMD-64 box
While upgrading openSUSE-10.3-64bit to the latest "hal" package

hal-0.5.10_git20071212-10.2.x86_64

Yast issued a dependency conflict to the effect that some programs
require the 32 bit version of hal. I thought this might mean the
latest i586 package which would be

hal-0.5.10_git20071212-10.3.i586

Trying to upgrade "hal" to this produces a long list of conflicts.

Meanwhile there IS a "hal-32bit" package in the distribution

hal-32bit-0.5.9_git20070831-13.x86_64

which IS installed i.e. no grounds for any conflict.

I'm a little confused.

When I did an Online Update yesterday, it also auto-selected the 32-bit
version of hal. But there were no conflicts. It installed without any
problems. So the problem you have is not "normal".

what is the reason for upgrading hal?

See my other post. Basically I'm trying anything I can find
to recover the ability to move pictures from my usb camera
to disk. I even went back to my archived initial install image
and it doesn't work on there either. Looks like upgrading to
10.3 or the concurrent migration to 64-bit has something to
do with it.

I just mounted it manually

mount /dev/sdb1 /home/shared/sdb1

that at least takes the pressure off.
