Is there a component missing or did I just do something stupid and not realize it.

Then make sure the line-in is active in the sound cards mixer. You can get the details of this by searching your install CD for *.pdf. The one you want has MMC in the name. It'll have pictures of what connection needs to be done. MMC7.2 was the last version to support the AIW Rage128 Pro. It'd be worth your time to upgrade to it and the last display drivers.
