Hi,
I have the 2 large trays plus the small manual one on this HP laser printer.
Can I add a third large tray to the bottom of this model?

Three trays is the maximum for this printer. The "x" model that you have comes
with the maximum number.
A question comes to mind, with 500 sheet capacity (250 in each cassette) and a
50 sheet multipurpos tray looking at a fourth tray suggests exceeding the duty
cycle of the printer. Or do you simply want a tray for special paper?

Hi Tony
Yes it is needed for special paper. On the bottom of the second tray there
are all the same fittings that would allow another similar tray to be added.
Is this not possible on this machine? Can you recommend one that will take 3
proper trays but doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Cheers
Lenny

The printer PCL driver does not support tray 4, so that means the hardware
won't support it either. I can only assume the tray 3 option can be installed
on a printer that does support tray 4 and that is why the hardware is present
on the bottom of the tray.
I am reluctant to recommend printers due to the myriad of options that are
available and the difficulties in assessing needs in a forum like this. However
I would suggest that you call an HP dealer and ask for the cheapest printer
that supports 3 cassette trays (plus the MP tray, tray 1). It is likely that a
printer that supports 4 trays will do what you want since that feature
generally only comes on high spec printers. You would have to specify your
operating system, the type of connection you use (Ethernet, USB etc.) and
whether you need a duplexer etc.
Good luck
Tony

hi tony,
thanks for your reply. I spoke to HP yesterday and they assured me that the
printer would take the 4th tray? I do hope you are wrong because I have just
ordered it!
