From: nope on 28 Dec 2007 15:04 Is there such a thing as an hp50g in the same color scheme as the hp49g+? I ask because I like the color scheme of the hp49g+, but am aware of the hardware issues assciated with the hp49g+ keyboard. If none exists, how impossible would it be to mod an hp50g to look like an hp49g+, if I can get my hands on an hp49g+ case? -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

This post has far better info than I can provide: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.hp48/msg/86c86482eaac349a So, make sure to get the 3rd-gen keyboard. The way to tell is mentioned in this post: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.hp48/msg/95935ad8d613b1ae The picture he mentions is the following: http://mikemander.servehttp.com:8008/hp/HP50g/pages/page_10.html This is a picture of a 50g, but notice the small distict strip of plastic right above the SD card slot. A 49g+ w/ the good keyboard will have that same strip, though it will be gold instead of black. I think that's the best way to tell since it can be seen through the packaging. I'll bet Eric (www.hpcalc.org) could set you up if you don't have any stores which sell them nearby. BTW, I've got a 3rd gen 49g+ sitting right here on my desk, so if you need a pic of one, I can get that for you. I can attest that the keyboard is pretty much flawless, and has endured a couple years of pretty regular use without much in the way of wear except for the gold starting to flake off. However, note that you're still missing out on 50g-only features like the serial port, the 4th battery, the ability to be powered off USB, etc. Good luck! Greg M.

As was mentioned by Greg M, a third-generation 49G+ is the same thing, except for having no serial port, not self-powered from live USB cable, and slightly more frugal re batteries. Explanation of "third generation" 49G+ (with serial numbers, as far as known) was also once posted by Eric Rechlin, who keeps reading this group, but has the wisdom not to spend much time writing :) "HP 49G+ keyboard answers" [Apr 11 2006] http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.hp48/msg/86c86482eaac349a "Buying a HP-49G+ - how to know which keyboard?" There is no serial port opening in an HP49G+ case, and an HP49G+ case also is equipped to hold only three AAA cells, whereas an HP50G requires four; if by any chance it would require a third-generation HP49G+ case to even fit the latest keyboard and lowered SD card slot of HP50G, then the unmodified original HP49G+ within that case might already satisfy everything you want anyway. -[ ]-

The paint starts rubbing off and makes it look like you have poor hygiene. Then it starts to chip off. That makes it look like a piece of junk. Yup, you want to keep the pretty black. Scott Chapin |
