When I try to sync mij HTC smartphone with my pc, the device says: no
Outlook installed. Which is true, because I have Windows Mail in stead of
Outlook, supposedly better than Outlook. What to do, should I install
Outlook?

Well:

1. Windows Mobile syncs with Outlook, not with Windows Mail.
2. Windows Mail is far from being better than Outlook. It may be better than
its antecessor Outlook Express, but to compare it to Outlook is a completely
different game.

Synchronisation only works with Outlook.

Yes, if you have it, install it. It's a much better and more full-featured
program.

If you don't have Outlook and don't want to buy it, you might consider an
alternative sync program. Plaxo.com, for example will sync Outlook Express
or Windows Mail with a Pocket PC for $50/year. Outlook is a one-time
purchase, but Plaxo allows wireless synching.
