My new 3rd generation iPod tells me it can't be recognized by my PB G4
running OS X10.3.9. How high up the upgrade ladder do I need to go to
use my new toy? Will I still be able to run Classic? If not what are
my best solutions? How much should I expect to pay for this upgrade on
line?

Version 10.4.x will still run Classic; 10.5.x will not. But I don't
_think_ you need to upgrade just to use a 3rd-gen iPod, because as I
recall my wife was using hers before 10.4 shipped. If you post more
details about the problem someone might be able to help figure out what
the real problem is.

Assuming you're talking about the 3G *iPod* and not the 3G iPod
*nano*, That strikes me as a little odd. I have a 3G iPod (the one
with the 4 buttons -- reverse, menu, play/pause, and forward -- across
the top above the touch wheel) and it worked fine with versions of OS
X well prior to 10.3.9.

I just checked the specs [1] and officially it supports 10.1.5 or later,
although I think the real upgrade driver is the version of iTunes you
need to have installed. However, having the wrong version of iTunes
shouldn't stop your machine from mounting the iPod at all (which is
what I'm taking your "can't be recognized" to mean).

I'd start to wonder if the iPod has an issue ... at the risk of asking
an obvious question, have you tried it on any other machine to make
sure that it's not just the iPod that's somehow on the fritz?

Now if you're talking about a 3G iPod Nano, for that you need iTunes
7.4 or later, which means you need OS 10.4.8 according to Apple [2].
So in that case, a Tiger upgrade would definitely be in your future.
Luckily, 10.4 discs are cheap these days; a Google Shopping search
turned up people selling them off for around $20.

Good luck,
Kadin.

At the risk of stating the absurd, a 3 Gen iPod will only work with
FireWire. Later generations only work with USB. You are plugging it
into the FW port of your Mac?

Doesn't the little booklet that came with your iPod contain that info?
If not, I am sure you can find compatibility info on http://www.apple.com
