From: mark.norgate@gmail.com on 20 Feb 2006 15:24 I recently posted a thread because I've been having problems with iTunes mixing up the ordering of tracks when importing. I've discovered (I think) that it's because I was importing several CDs with the same album name. I am now, however, wondering what the "part of a compilation" check box does? What effect does it have on the library, on the the ordering of tracks and so forth? Is it something I should worry about? I've never thought about it before. Thanks, Mark

It simply causes the files to be stored in the directory "Compilations" rather than in a directory with the artist's name. -- -=Elden=- http://www.moondog.org

This *will* cause tracks to get mixed up if you have multiple albums by the same name from different artists, and they're incorrectly marked as compilations. Also, if you sort your library by Artist, the compilations will be sorted by artist instead of by track number. -- agreenbu @ nyx . net andrew michael greenburg

It's not so all-fired hard to connect iTunes tracks to an actual file, remember you can hit cmd-r to reveal the song in its folder. If that's too much work to remember, use the File menu, select "Show Song File". -- Gnarliue

Compilations lets you mark Compilation discs as such. (e.g. the soundtrack to most movies.) The ONLY place it makes a difference is in "Browse" (when you push the eye), and then under "Artist" you have a new category called "Compilations", and albums and tracks will appear there as a combined unit instead of scattered in pieces throughout the appropriate artists. And even then it only does that IF you have the "Browse by compilation" preference checked. You should generally mark compilations as such, because it doesn't really change anything, and the one thing it does change can be toggled on and off very easily. --- The problem you are having is completely different. When you have two albums with the same name, and you sort by album name it sorts first by album, then by track, then by artist. So, in my case I have several greatest hits albums, and when I sort by album, and scroll down to greatest hits it shows the first track from each, then the 2nd track from each, then the 3rd track from each, etc. This seems to be a flaw in itunes, and theres nothing that can prevent it. I usually sort by artist, so its not a problem for me, as no artist I have has identically named albums. (I wonder if its problem for classical music collectors who might have several performances of a given piece on potentially identically named albums. e.g. The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, or Peer Gynt Suites I & II by Grieg...) For now the best, and only workaround is to avoid sorting by album. -cheers |
