The lyrics in iTunes - are they stored as a tag within the music file
itself, or in some separate area?

The reason I ask is that I've just added the lyrics to a track (Smash
Mouth, Padrino, daftly catchy), but I've discovered the track is from
ye olde days and is a 128kbps VBR Xing rip I made years back. I'm
likely to get home tonight and re-rip the CD, which will offer to
replace the tracks. At that stage, will the lyircs still be there or
will I have lost them?

It's no t a hassle either way - just cut'n'paste from the trashed file.
But it's worth me asking just to note thta I have something to remember
to do other than merely rip the CD.

Cheers,
Ian

It depends on the format and I guess what sort of tag you're trying to add.

For example iTunes doesn't support tagging AIFF files, so the extra bits are
kept outside of the file.

They're in the file themselves. You can verify this with strings(1), eg.:

[15:01][bas(a)candide:~/Public/iTunes/iTunes Music/Roots Manuva/Run Come Save Me]$ strings 03\ Witness\ \(1\ Hope\).m4a | grep "well"
ell well well [x3]
[CHORUS]ell well well [x3]

If it recognises the track as being the same one, it may well update the
one in the DB and keep any extra info you've tagged into it....
