I got a call 2 days ago from a Dell technical hand-holder in Texas
who reviewed the case and decided to add a new heatsink and a
new AC adaptor to the motherboard shipment. She said that the
important thing was to get the laptop fixed rather than diagnosed.
But... she must have been overridden by someone higher up because
what arrived in L.A. was just an AC adaptor - which proved to be
the solution. The laptop was dead because the battery was dead -
although the AC adaptor was plugged in. After the technician had
done some tests with the new AC adaptor and had left, I spent a
few hours wringing the laptop out with diagnostic utilities, and it tested
out OK. The technician also put on a new bezel (which contains the
2 buttons and blue LEDs), but although the Power button is now a
"flatty" instead of an "inny", the MediaDirect button is still an "inny".
I guess I'll have learn to live with it. :-)

It's too bad that the AC adaptor couldn't have been tested more
easily. It would have saved Dell two technician dispatches, a CPU,
and a motherboard. And it would have saved me 3 fewer days of
down time on the laptop.
