I installed the sound card
82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller
It works, but midi does not. The option "Start Sequencer" in Yast is
enabled.

Kmid opens the midi file, and seems to play it, but I can't hear anything.

Aplaymidi says:
s10:/s10:/dev/snd # aplaymidi town.mid
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:455:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: Permission
denied
Cannot open sequencer - Permission denied
dev/snd # aplaymidi town.mid
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:455:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: Permission
denied
Cannot open sequencer - Permission denied

In /dev/snd/ there indeed is no seq.

I read the MIDI-HOWTO, also some other SuSE documentation, but I didn't find
anything to start with.

Please give me some hint.

Zvuk (sounds like sound ;)

Have you checked midi support for your chip?
If it really has no support than try to install timidity.
It works fine out of the box, but it is possible to upgrade midi sound
using eawpats. The other application is fluidsynth, but you need sound
fonts file. The one that can be found in YaST is tied to SB Live sound
card, probably legal reasons.

You have to load a sound font in Linux. Try Timidity or if you have at
least 1 GOG of memory then try Fluidsynth.

Thanks you for the answer, and thanks to Darrell Stec for his answer too.

Yes, zvuk means sound. I am from Zagreb, Croatia. I'm only writing in
English because this is an international newsgroop.

I got it to work now with timidity. I can now start explore MIDI in linux
using the programs you told me about.

I also have some other problems with the soundcard. They might be caused by
using SCMP. I boot the same linux system in the physical machine and in
vmware. SCMP controls X configuration, network and sound. With X and network
there are no problems. Regarding sound, when I reboot in the physical
machine the soundcard seems to be configured in Yast but it does not work. I
have to delete it and configure it again in order to work.
