From: Ron on 19 Nov 2006 15:36 I have several questions regarding adjusting volume settings in midi files and hope someone can help me out. I am using Sonar 2 XL. 1. In the track view: adjusting the volume slider on an individual track seems to temporarily lower the volume of that instrument, but when the next note hits, the volume goes to the velocity or volume level of that note. Same thing seems to happen if this is done in the Console/Mixer view. The only solution I have found is to use Process Interpolate to lower the velocity of all the notes on that track from the Piano track view. Is this the best way to do this to get the whole track's volume lower in the mix? Is there some setting that I have wrong that might be causing the volume slider to not work properly? 2. Is CC Volume-7 on the Control View used to control the volume of an entire track? I have only used it to fade the volume at the end of a song by drawing the line. 3. Overall Volume of entire midi file: The only way I have found to adjust all of the tracks at once is to group them together on the Console view and adjust the sliders as one unit. Is there a better way to do this? 4. Leveling the volume of several midi files: Is there some method to get about 50 files to play back at approximately the same level so I don't have to ride the volume slider on my hardware mixer? Thanks to anyone who can help me clear these issues up. Ron
From: Sue Morton on 19 Nov 2006 16:41 Volume is a midi note property so that may be the frustration you are running into. Try using midi envelopes on the tracks or clips -- this may be just the thing you are needing? -- Sue Morton "Ron" <ron(a)NOSPAM88.com> wrote in message news:xf38h.8357$r6.7459(a)bignews1.bellsouth.net... >I have several questions regarding adjusting volume settings in midi files >and hope someone can help me out. From: Sue Morton on 19 Nov 2006 16:44 P.S. Velocity is another property that, while it really isn't volume, it does affect the perception of volume. It can represent how hard a piano key is struck, a string is plucked, and so on. From: Ron on 19 Nov 2006 19:56 I have never used envelopes, so I'll check that out. Would that be the way to go for overall midi file volume? Would you put an envelope on every track? I like envelopes because they are non-destructive. Although the envelope goes on the entire track, you can tweak it to change the volume only where you want it. They take a bit of getting used to but are very flexible and, as I said, non-destructive is the best part for me. You can also make non-destructive changes by inserting midi-fx into the fx bin on the track, or destructive changes by processing midi fx onto the track using the process command on the menu. The midi-fx that comes with Sonar doesn't affect volume. There is one that affects velocity. The tracks command on the menu changes the volume destructively, but that sets all notes' volume to a hard volume value, it is not a relative figure or percent up or down from where the note is currently set. Lastly, you can open one of the views such as event list and change the volumes of individual notes. I don't do much editing this way, or on the piano roll, so I'll let other tell you some of these methods (I think you can select groups based on certain criteria and change several notes at once). -- Sue Morton "Ron" <ron(a)NOSPAM88.com> wrote in message news:L278h.906$f8.616(a)bignews7.bellsouth.net... >I have never used envelopes, so I'll check that out.
