I can assure you that at university in the late 80s, the retention of the more serious newsgroups (sci.math for example), was measured in years. There's nothing in the protocols that precludes the retention to be unlimited. If you're flinging a message into the medium, you're implicitly giving all servers permission to so archive, IMHO.
