I wonder if this would be better directed to users(a)openoffice.

That sounds very odd behaviour.

First, try 'paste special' and see if explicitly pasting as
unformatted text makes a difference.

Otherwise, absent other ideas, try moving your private OOo config
area to one side and then starting OOo. If that makes no difference,
completely remove and reinstall OOo.

Yep, it works. I've used it 3 or 4 times and it always seems to place the
text where its supposed to be. Problem apparently solved. Thanks for your
help.
