i have no intention of installing *anything* written by those spyware

If you have mplayer with all codecs from plf, you should be able to play
a local .rm file. The Linux real player doesn't resemble it's current
Window$ counterpart and it's very "bare bones", so your fears are most
likely unfounded. You may still need it though for web streams.

Real Player for Linux is the open-source Helix Player integrated with
the Real codecs. Don't worry, it's clean. Go here and click on the Real
player button.

RaMRod is right. THe Linux version is a version behind the Win version.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to make a single tune loop
endlessly, but in WIn 'play continously' is right there on the frackin
menu

That is correct, the Linux version of realplayer behaves itself. When you
select the "don't phone home" checkbox the Linux version will not still
attempt to connect to real networks each time you play a clip. Unlike the
Windows version which will try to initiate a connection whether the
checkbox is selected or not.
