Hi all, I have 2 ppcs that have problems. the first is a hp4150.
Problem with this one is that I can send and receive mail but when I try
to create a new a/c an try to send an e-mail a message comes up saying
'system administrator (this message is on the FROM line) - invalid
message recipients' (on the subject line) The following recipients are
invalid......then has the e-mail address I was trying to send to (in the
text area). This ppc
has an old version of skype installed that I use and hope isn't the
cause
as I don't think the newer versions of skype will work on this model.
The other software I have installed that may be causing the problem
is Navman software but I use frequently.
The other ppc is a hp4700 the problem with this one is that I can't send
any emails at all (receiving is ok). Thought it may have been my router
so went to a mates home and tested it there but the same problems occur.
Does anyone have any ideas as to the problem. I know the hp4700 has
worked in the past because it used to belong a friend who sold to it to
me when he upgraded. The only thing I've added is tom tom. The 2nd
problem with the hp4700 is that I can't install 'skype' on it. Message
says something like 'not a windows or Microsoft application.' What
really weird is that when my friend owned it he had skype installed and
it worked fine. Tried to locate an old version of skype to see if it
would make any difference but all the versions I've seen are current.
I'd really appreciate some help if anyone knows what the problems could
be.

Thanks

Pardon my ignorance, but what's an "a/c"?

The e-mail message sounds like a typical "bounce back" message from an
e-mail provider saying a message was undeliverable, and doesn't seem to be
generated by your PPC.

I doubt either of these apps could interfere with the messaging app.

Not without a lot more information. Typically problems sending are
incorrect SMTP settings, or trying to send mail through a foriegn server
(one other than your ISP.)

> I know the hp4700 has worked in the past because it used to belong a

Yes, but it worked with HIS e-mail settings and account, correct? I suspect
your settings are incorrect- perhaps the wrong port setting, you didn't
check "use authentication," etc.

For anyone here to troubleshoot, you'll probably need to tell us (at the
very least!) who the mail provider is, and what settings you've entered.

> The only thing I've added is tom tom.

Again, that's not likely to break the messaging app.

PPCs don't run Windows, but Windows CE (Windows Mobile.) Installing
applications on these devices are handled one of two ways. You either
execute an installer program, typically an .exe file, ON YOUR PC (with the
device connected) and PC installs the program over Activesync. Alternately,
you can copy/download the PPC installer (typically a .cab file) directly to
the device, and tap on it in File Manager and it will install on the device.

The error message you were getting sounds like you were attempting to run
the PC version of the installer on the PPC directly.

The .cab file download is here:
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-pocketpc-cab

Download that file, copy it to your device and try to run it. If Skype
isn't compatible for your device, you can try Fring at www.fring.com, an
alternate VoIP provider who's all-in-one VoIP app lets you make and receive
Skype calls as well as a number of other VoIP and IM providers.

a/c = account

The other thing to remember is that with my HP4150 I can send and
receive mail. But for some reason if I configure another account using
the same settings - it doesn't work. I get the same message. That's
what's really weird

As for bounce back. I called Demon (service provider) on the phone and
had them look at my data coming out. They said the error message comes
up so fast that it wasn't even getting to the router

SMTP settings are correct and were confirmed when I had my service
provider on the line

When I spoke to my service provider - they said it doesn't need to be
checked

User info:
my name - xxxxx
user name - xxxxx
password - xxxxx

then account type = pop3
name = xxxxx

server info:

incoming mail = pop3.demon.co.uk
outgoing mail = post.demon.co.uk
domain = xxxxxx

options
(don't need to config. because of the type of account I have - says my
service provider )

Tried .cab file - still made no difference (not sure if it is the one
you've listed
will try this one shortly

Downloaded the .cab file but got a message that said

setup failed
The file "\my documents\skypeforpocketpc.cab" is not a valid windows CE
setup file

Going to visit the other website you've mentioned

That is really weird. Can you back up the device (there's probably a backup
utility in ROM if it's pre-WM5) then hard-reset it (wipe out all data and
restore it to factory-fresh state) and reconfigure the e-mail? If it works
then, you can reinstall the apps on it one by one and see if one "breaks"
the email. If the experiment is a total bust (e-mail still doesn't work
right away) you can restore from the backup file and be right back where you
started.

Weird. I'm not aware that PPCs can gererate their own bounceback e-mails,,
so something weird is going on.

Ok. I assume you can send e-mail from your PC when using the same internet
connection/router and it's connected to Demon? Demon's help pages indicate
that you can only send Demon e-mail when connected to Demon (that's a
typical ISP SPAM-control measure, particularly when they don't use SMTP
authentication), so it probably won't work when connected to other WiFi APs
(unless they coincidentally happen to be on Demon as well.) Are you certain
the device is connecting to your own router and not, say, a neighbor's on a
different ISP?

Ok, but again, has it ever worked for YOUR e-mail account and suddenly
stopped working, or has it never worked (except for your buddy's e-mail?)

I saw no reference to having to enter a domain name on Demon's site. Is
that field blank or populated?

It would seem that way based on the website- Demon's settings are simple
enough.

Is your 4700 running WM2003 or WM5? IIRC, the newer versions of Skype run
on WM5+ only. You might have to email Skype and see if they'll send you an
older version for WM2003. (The Skype site has VERY little info on the PPC
requirements, but IIRC, they used to offer separate versions for the
different WM revisions.)

Sadly, I probably gave bad advice there- I think Fring is for WM5+ only as
well, so if the device won't run Skype, it won't run Fring either...

Good luck!
