I signed up for .Mac years ago, and I'm letting it go. My wife used the
associated iTunes account to download stuff. She's going to sign up her
on account, and we want to make sure this doesn't screw up the library
of tunes she's already downloaded under the .Mac account details. I
have no clue how to figure this out from the Apple site. Any
suggestions on where to look?

You can keep the same .mac username as your Apple ID even after your
..Mac account expires, and I don't believe they release it even if you
choose not to use it. For example, I haven't signed up for .Mac until
after the free trial given when it switched over from iTools, and I
still use my "mac.com" email address as the Apple ID I use for my
iTunes account without problem. Just make sure you change the e-mail
address associated with the Apple ID at myinfo.apple.com.

My apologies for being so confusing. My wife is signing up for her
own account after using the .Mac one. We want to make sure signing
up for her own account doesn't screw up the library of tunes she's
already downloaded.

Any suggestions on where to find this out at Apple's site? I can't
find it.

I wasn't confused, but now I am. I'll try to clarify.

The .Mac account and Apple ID are separate issues. I'm assuming your
Apple ID is your .Mac e-mail address. Even if you drop .Mac, you can
still use that e-mail address as your Apple ID; going to the above web
site, you can change the e-mail address associated with the Apple ID
from blahblahblah(a)mac.com to whatever else you want. So long as you
still know the password associated with that Apple ID, you can still
use music downloaded with that account, no matter what you do from
here forward. But you will need to remember that Apple ID (the one
with the .Mac e-mail address) and password to keep listening to the
music; you can't move it over to another Apple ID account (AFAIK).

For example, my Apple ID is geoff underscore green @ mac.com, and even
though I don't have a current .Mac account and haven't for years, I
still use that as my Apple ID. AFAIK, Apple isn't reassigning .Mac
usernames after they've been used.

Does this help?

Multiple Apple IDs can be associated with one iTunes library.

So, you purchased all of your music so far as foo(a)mac.com but decided
not to renew. Now you have your new account, bar(a)yahoo.com. You can
purchase music with this now, and your foo(a)mac.com stuff will still
work. But you'll have to track your authorizations separately -- so the
abc album you purchased as foo will stay associated with foo, and your
future xyz albums will be associated with bar, and you'll need to
perform both authorizations on each machine you want to play those sets
of music on.

I could have worded this better, but I think it answers your question
correctly.
