> zinc plated forged? you buying marine grade?

Long ago we purchased 28' of steel triangle truss, which was galvanized or
zinc plated - I don't remember. It was used outdoors quite frequently, and
wasn't rusting. At the time, I was totally new to rigging. I figured if the
truss was coated, then the rest of the hardware should be, too. The overall
cost difference between steel and zinc plated was negligible, given the
small amount of rigging.

The second time I went to do rigging, a lot of it was above a drop ceiling,
where it would probably not be inspected as often as it should. There are
some water pipes for the HVAC and plumbing. Although any leak should be
noticed, it just wasn't worth worrying about.

I was in a building once where there was a small water leak. It wasn't large
enough to notice for a long time. When it was noticed, there was a large
amount of corrosion or rust on some hardware below it.

Although in both these circumstances (which constitutes my rigging
experience), zinc plated was probably overkill, I didn't have the experience
or knowledge to make a different decision. Everything that I read had said
to use Grade 5 or 8. Use a design factor of at least 5:1 (I chose to use at
least 7:1, and in most cases 10:1). But, there was no mention of coating.
The truss was galvanized or zinc plated steel, so that's what I used.

Anyway... That's the story. :-)

Disclaimer: I am not a rigger and do not pretend to be a rigger. I am not
qualified to offer any advice in regards to the safe practice of rigging.
Rigging should only be done by qualified individuals.
