Is it supposed to be the IP address "style" that the router is "giving" out? The PC might be getting a "signal" but does not completely get an IP address so it maight default to the "auto IP feature" that MS placed into XP.

You might also try adding the default route from a command line also using the route command. Example: route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 metric 1 (if the gateway is at 192.168.1.1) Jim.
