Is the Remote Desktop (RDC) session local to your LAN? If so depending on what VPN client your using it may or may not be possible. If its the built-in PPTP VPN client then you can configure the client to enable split tunneling. If its another client like Cisco or OpenVPN for example it may not be possible depending on how the client is configured by the network admins. For the MSFT PPTP VPN client see this article for help enabling or disabling split tunneling.
