From: Room2b on 14 Jan 2006 08:30 Has anyone here had experience--good, bad, indifferent--running a show off one of these chinese diesel generators that are now popping up like popcorn on ebay? or can point me to any sources of real world test information? example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7580490369&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 There are a lot of others being offered from 5 to 6 kw. Quite a few outdoor festivals in my area have a strong "green" flavor and would love to have their sound running off biodiesel--the fuel is readily available now. But I'm curious what the odds are that these new, much cheaper chinese gen sets would perform.
From: Rodney on 14 Jan 2006 08:59 Don't know about that one, but a few years I put out an RFP for a 30kW unit, silenced on a trailer. The low bid came back from some unknown made in Italy. I was a little sceptical, but bough it anyway. It is a great unit, quiet and solid as a rock. Rodney

Along the lines of if there is profit to be made growing plants for fuel, even more rainforest will be cut down to plant these crops. Gareth.

That's not a lot of power... About the smallest I've used was a 20KW for a PA only gig we used to do at a local college. The larger generators have some advantages.... They use electronic regulation so they're more stable.. They have a larger rotating mass so they hold RPMs better as the load changes. Most of the generators I've used have been Multiquip Whisperwatts... Here's the link to their site. http://www.multiquip.com/mqpower/pages-products/whisperwatt/whisperwatt.html Very good, dependable units that are readily available from rental houses. Nice part about renting is they'll deliver it and maintain it... Also, if it dies on you the rental shop has ways of fixing or replacing the defective unit. > Quite a few outdoor festivals in my area have a strong > "green" flavor and would love to have their sound running > off biodiesel--the fuel is readily available now. The problem with that for now is availability and cost. If you can find bio-diesel it's typically more expensive. Mike Borkhuis
From: www.locoworks.com on 14 Jan 2006 20:03 There are hundreds of these units, some of very high KW, running around Hollywood. You may be able to find some used ones by advertising in one of the trade papers. Ask for a "blimped" generator. You can lean up against one of these and not know it's running.
