From: sn00p on 6 Feb 2005 19:27 hi, new to this group and to linux been having trouble getting my sound card to work, it works on windows, and suse 9.1 won't work on redhat, fedora, or mandrake i've tried several choices, most times it's recognised and shows by its proper name so my question is... how do you change/assign drivers in linux? i'm not terribly familiar with command line but if anyone has any tips it would be appreciated, thanks, sn00p

Is it onboard, pci, isa or what. What make is it ?
From: sn00p on 6 Feb 2005 19:45 the one i'm trying currently is an old soundblaster isa vibra16 (or something to that effect) there is as well an onboard one i disabled through the bios as i haven't a clue what it is (it's an old dell optiplex pc with an intel board that i can't make out it's model from anywhere-it does however work in suse 9.1 and anything microsoft) "Thor" <thor(a)valhalla.bbs.org> wrote in message news:cu6db8$8dc$1(a)lust.ihug.co.nz... > sn00p wrote: > >> hi, new to this group and to linux >> been having trouble getting my sound card to work, it works on windows, >> and suse 9.1 >> won't work on redhat, fedora, or mandrake >> i've tried several choices, most times it's recognised and shows by its >> proper name so my question is... >> how do you change/assign drivers in linux? i'm not terribly familiar >> with command line but if anyone has any tips it would be appreciated, >> thanks, sn00p > > > A little more information would help us help you. > Is it onboard, pci, isa or what. From: sn00p on 6 Feb 2005 21:01 it's really not critically important, i'm quite likely just going to switch back to suse 9.1 so what i have already will work and call it good enough. i still have to learn this stuff so i'm not going to go too overboard buying different soundcards, i was only willing to try out the ones in my IT department's box of goodies that i could beg, borrow, and steal. thanks for your input "Thor" <thor(a)valhalla.bbs.org> wrote in message news:cu6e59$8dc$2(a)lust.ihug.co.nz... > sn00p wrote: > >> the one i'm trying currently is an old soundblaster isa vibra16 (or >> something to that effect) there is as well an onboard one i disabled >> through the bios as i haven't a clue what it is (it's an old dell >> optiplex pc with an intel board that i can't make out it's model from >> anywhere-it does however work in suse 9.1 and anything microsoft) >> "Thor" <thor(a)valhalla.bbs.org> wrote in message >> news:cu6db8$8dc$1(a)lust.ihug.co.nz... >>> sn00p wrote: >>> > > > Ok you might have some trouble getting it going with a 2.6 kernel.
