I was very surprised to discover that, sometimes, the addition of water
can improve the flavour considerably. (And, no, I'm not one who normally
adds anything to any spirit.)

Adding a /little/ water actually helps to bring out the scent and the
flavour -- see http://www.smws.co.uk/whisky/enjoy.php

When the whisky's bottled at 60+% (as a few of The Society's malts are) it
also helps to prevent the lining of your mouth and throuat being eaten away!
