Not strictly an answer to your question, but the Linux Emporium sell a proper hardware modem in a PCMCIA card, which should work with most laptops I'd guess. But it irks me that I can't google for it(1) and to pay more than for a desktop with a piece of equipment that doesn't work(2). The former Lucent now Agere chipset seems well supported by the Martian Modem driver in Non-free. I have Thinkpads 390e and T23 with that chipset and nary a problem. I know they're quite old by now. Several years ago I had used a T42 with another chipset that was supported by the HSF modem, I believe. The author required $10 for a code to run at higher than 14.4 kbps. That was a bit of a pain but it worked well enough. I don't even know if analog modem functionality is included in new laptops. We have some T60s at work and I'm not sure about them or the new Dells. Even PCMCIA card slots may become a thing of the past. Does anyone make a USB modem? - Nate >> -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. They are also readily available on Ebay, for about $10 US including shipping (to USA). See this list of compatible hardware [0]. I use a Xircom, which works quite well. > James. I believe the same solution may apply here. Staying with the google theme there are results such as these: http://www.google.com/products?&q=usb+56K+modem+linux Though it then becomes yet another dongle to carry around... cheers, Owen. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST(a)lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
