As I reboot my Solaris 10 x86 system, I see a lengthy error message.
Before I can finish writing it down, the system goes into a different
screen.

What file stores all the messages that pop up during the boot up
process?

Most of them go into /var/adm/messages (assuming nobody has fsck'ed too much
with /etc/syslog.conf.)
