Hello, its so long since I used solaris 8 that i cant remember where the ssh
package is . I thought it was in sfw directory on one of the cd's. I need to
install ssh from cd as the network is not working and I just cant find it.

The sfw stuff was on its own cd iirc. Since this will be eight years old now,
there seems little merit in installing it then patching it to within an inch of its
life, so grab a current version from sunfreeware.com and burn that to cd.

I've looked at a Solaris 8 2/02 Companion Software cd but cannot see ssh.

The Blueprint book suggests ssh was added to the OS in Solaris 9 and
that you should use openssh (+openssl) for Solaris 8 and earlier.

And if you have to go down that road anyways...

I would recommend getting the source code for both of these, and then
apply the "High Performance Networking" patches from the Pittsburgh
Supercomputing Center. It's good code, and they're a good bunch.

Also keep in mind if there is no /dev/random, you'll need to install an
entropy deamon. I think there was one patch on a certain version of S8 to
add in the /dev/random, but I seem to remember it either had never resolved
problems or wasn't good enough and ssh/sshd complained about it.

Maybe it required so many other patches to work, the whole proceedure was
simplified by using a 3rd party entropy source.

Just saying there might be a bit more work involved than appears on the
surface.
