From: Nate Najar on 4 May 2008 17:03 so right now i only have 2 channels of pres. millennia hv3c. it's my favorite pre and I love it. i used to have 6 channels of rnp and they sound good and work well and i'm happy with them, but I don't have them anymore (i needed the cash a while back). so now I'm needing some mic pres again as I've redone how my project studio is setup. I've never heard the sytek. It's the same price per channel as the rnp and I don't need a bunch of external psu's. How do they compare? If I had the money I'd just have 8 channels of Milennia, to give you a benchmark. I know I can be happy with the rnp, but would the sytek be cleaner/fuller/better somehow//youname it? or same class but just different. in which case, what is the difference? I know we're just talking low to mid grade stuff here. thanks, Nate

I know we're just > talking low to mid grade stuff here. thanks, I have an RNP and a buddy has the Sytek, and we've done a few comparisons using the few mics we have. To me it seems that the RNP has a little more punch somehow, it sounds great recording rock vocals with a 58 or 57, and even made my Oktava 319 sound pretty good on a female rock vocalist. The 'clean' channels on the Sytek sound like magic to me on drum overheads, very detailed and clear without being hyped in any way. Overall the BB channels didn't really do a lot for me, but I was impressed that when we ran an AT4040 through them it sounded like a whole new mic: rich, detailed and still smooth. To me the RNP makes a nice utility preamp / DI that I can quickly use live and for recording, and the DI section even makes my old POS bass should pretty good. The Sytek is close to the top of my wish list, because of what I've heard it do and because it's inexpensive enough to be a different kind of utility preamp, if that makes any sense. To be fair we're budget recordists and don't have a lot of gear to compare with, nothing as good as a Millennia, but if you're looking for a way to add amp channels on a budget it's hard to go wrong with a Sytek. The Sytek also has a good resale value, I see them on Ebay going for 85%~90% of Mike's own sales, so you should be able to recover most of your investment if you decide to upgrade a couple of years from now.
