The problem is the old howtoes which don't update contain the invalid e-mails of the authors. They long has changed. The google gives nothing. I have found the mistaken in the PPP-howto and I would say to the author about it. If you knows about a maillist, answer to me. Daneel

Someone decides there is need for a tutorial on a given topic, they look up the template for doing a HOWTO, and they write it. If there is a need to update it, and their interest continues, then they update it. If they lose interest, it doesn't get updated. Hence if the email address is invalid, it's no longer maintained. In some cases, someone interested enough will come along and decide to take over an unmaintained HOWTO. I think they just basically do it, presumably after making an attemtp at finding the author. They are generally issued on a license that is "open source" so one can build on an existing author's work. Some aren't maintained because there's no longer a need. An odd bit of hardware, for instance, might have needed a HOWTO when it was current, but since few are using that hardware anymore, and there have been no changes, there's no reason to update the howto. Others may be abandoned because is better handled in a different HOWTO. Of course, a lot of the HOWTOs haven't been updated in years, suggesting other means of information have taken over. As if those wikis are complete. -- Torvalds' goal for Linux is very simple: World Domination |
