Look at http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/
Acronis True Image Home 2010 is the latest but not the only program that
will make an image of a hard drive. This image is normally stored on
an external drive and can be restored at any time. The image contains
everything that was on the drive, OS, Data, Settings, etc. Much like
an ISO image.

There are other programs that do the same, and this may not be the best,
but I use it and find it workable. I've replaced drives and it will
allow a 100Gig drive to be replaced with a 500Gig drive and will resize
the partition on the fly. Most better programs like this will.

If you do a bit of research on imaging software you should get up to
speed easily.

It certainly is possible to backup an entire drive.
You follow the instructions in the manual for the backup program that you
use.
