touchpad scroll no longer works

From: mindydee113 on 9 Apr 2010 16:57 My laptop (Compaq Presario R3000) recently got a virus. I took it to a technician who did a clean restore. After that, everything worked fine, except for the scroll function on the touch-pad driver. Somebody gave me a link to download a new driver from ALPS, but it did not work. Scroll function still does not work, so frustrating (but of course, it is not a critical function, just convenient). It worked fine before the restore. The technician moved away and his phone number is disconnected, so going back to him is not an option. My computer is running Windows XP Media Center Edition - version 5.1/service pack 3. I don't know if this is relevant but my daughter laptop also recently had a system restore. I noticed a "SALPS Touchpad Driver for Windows 2000/XP http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&produc t=442914ynaptics pointing device" in the system startup tray, at lower right hand of screen. I was told not to have too many items in the start up tray as it slows down the start up of computer. I was researching this item to see if it could be removed from start up tray. Under msconfig/start up tab, I found listed.....synTPLpr and synTPEnh. In researching, I found these are related to the synaptics touch-pad driver and do not need to be in start up tray. (I un-clicked them and restarted computer but pointing device icon is still there!) I read that the synTPLpr is the touch-pad driver and synTPEnh goes along with touch-pad driver and provides additional configurations. Her touch-pad and scroll bar work fine, by the way. So I looked at my start up items, under msconfig and I only had one item listed for touch-pad driver, which is.....SynTPStart and it is unchecked, so it does not open at start up. I do not know if this has anything to do with my current touch-pad issue or not? Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix the touchpad so that the scroll feature works once again? There is an Alps driver there. You can check Device Manager and see if the driver is the same one you installed. If not, download and install it. If the Synaptics driver has been disabled by you in MSCONFIG, that most likely is your issue. Make sure the driver loads and try again. You may have to configure the scroll feature in the software, accessible either from the Tray at the right of the Taskbar where the time is displayed or in Control Panel. I find the mouse much easier to use than the touchpad on both my laptops. YMMV. Bill

I am curious to try one out. $20 is a great price!
