I'm a novice at this but when I put in a DVD movie Windows Media Player says
I need a decoder. Is there a freeware one out there or another way to go
about playing DVDs on my laptop?

I would suggest Media Player Classic @

W2k & XP
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/mpc2kxp6487.7z?download

98 & ME
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/mpc98me6487.7z?download

If needed, some other useful tools @
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303

Since you said your a novice, you may also need a program to unpack 7zip
files, might I also suggest TugZip @ http://www.tugzip.com/

Good Luck,
FM
