On trying to update dotnet 1.1 for the critical update, it wouldn't install
and the history gave the error code "E0434F4D"

This didn't tell me anything, nor did the website help me...

At the bottom I inserted what I found in the windowsupdate log

Can anyone help me get this update installed???
