From: rock on
Hi,

I have an XP box with 2 HDs C: XP and D: 2 partitions, 1 for XP data and
the 2nd I want to install Linux (MEPIS).

I have the CD and it works fine as a CD os. I did an install and chose
the partition I want for Linux on hd2 and then the Grub for hd1.

It said it had installed it okay but when I rebooted I got..

Grub loading 1.5
Grub loading please wait

Error 17.

Now I can't get boot into XP or Linix, so I guess the loader is confused.

Any help getting it back okay please?

Any chance you gotta floppy drive and a floppy boot disk with earlier
windows boot floppy (95, 98) or even DOS on it? If so, boot from
floppy and from DOS command line, do:

fdisk /mbr

That should at least get you back to an XP boot so you can try again.

Your experience is exactly why I never use grub.

If you don't have a floppy drive, try your XP rescue disk. If you
don't have that, I'd reformat the whole damn computer and just install
linux. Windows has been trying to take over your computer for far too
long, anyway. Take your computer back. Dump Windows! ;)

Or use a Knoppix live CE to do the rescue.
If you don't have one to hand you should hie to the local
bookstore or Public Library and get Linux for Dummies which
should have a usable version of Knoppix included.
Read the relevant parts, which are clearly indicated
in the TOC.
It is very easy with Knoppix to do the same thing as
you would do with the floppy. XP is not so good as it might
hide your Linux install.

XP has nothing to do with a linux install. It's all between your
linux software, the hardware, and the bios. I've had no problems
intalling slackware as a dual boot system along with XP as long as the
box has an old floppy drive (lilo+fdsick/mbr), even on a crappy Vaios
box. I have had problems installing for dual boot on an Asus eee
netbook, but it's because the the Slack install program is stalling
out, not anything XP is doing. (At least I hope not! ;)

Yes well a few years back when I started using Linux I tried
to setup a dual boot and wiped my mbr, which resulted in losing
my XP install. I tried to repair with the XP recovery disk and ended
up losing my Linux install because XP could not see the alien file
system. I corrected on that time with a full XP re-install then
re-installed Linux and managed to do this without trashing my
mbr.
After that besides my regular Linux, Mandriva, I got a
Knoppix for Dummies book and learned more about what I
was doing. Knoppix is really useful and has the DOS tools
needed to correct these problems handy when you enter
"knoppix 1" at boot from the Live CD.

You might wonder at why I use Mandriva and that
is because I started out using Commodore-64, 64/128 and
then Amiga. I switched to using Mandriva full time
when my Amiga 2000b with hundreds of dollars of
upgrades over the years stopped being reliable.

Hey did you catch the bit about Sony stopping the
manufacture of floppy disks? No floppy on this cheapo
box with CD/DVD-R/W. Dual boot on 2 GHz Athlon X2
and next fall the dual boot goes and the Windows
will be virtual only, if I should live so long.

Have a good day.
