Bingo!!!

I kept getting messages to the effect that the attempt to point a series to an
address range failed.

I was assuming that indicated I wasn't referring to the right object.

Close. The chart's addressing was R1C1 and I was passing an alphabetic column
reference - having failed to append "(ReferenceStyle:=xlR1C1)" when I did a
..Range...Address.
